IT Modernization and DevOps News Week in ReviewIn a constantly-changing industry, standing still is not an option -- for your business or your career. And the same is true for the Flux7 blog, where we aim to provide you with valuable content that builds your personal knowledge and transforms your business. It is in this vein that we launch today the first of what we intend to be a regular series of DevOps news blogs, featuring highlights from the week that help keep you in the know, and driving your IT modernization forward.

Hashicorp Vault Improves Access Controls for Secrets Management

We kick off by sharing the news that Hashicorp has released Vault 0.10. A valuable solution for secret management, this newest release has additional features to help automate secrets management, further Vault's ability to operate natively in multi-cloud environments and notably makes the previously enterprise-only UI open source. According to Armon Dadgar, Founder and co-CTO, HashiCorp in ReadITQuick, “With HashiCorp Vault 0.10, organizations now have the ability to leverage any trusted source of identity to enforce system or application access, providing the approach to security that’s needed in a multi-cloud world.”

Forrester Wave Released on Public Cloud Platforms

On the heels of the AWS Summit in San Francisco where Werner Vogels announced that “friends don’t let friends build data centers” (supported by multiple examples of enterprises who are abandoning their data centers), Forrester released its Wave on Development-Only Public Cloud Platforms.

In its analysis of public cloud providers, Forrester found that, “The Leaders and Strong Performers all offer developers dozens of services that address a wide range of application use cases. Automation — to make both the platform itself and software it delivers smarter — also distinguish the top platforms.”

As advocates of cloud based DevOps automation, we are strong proponents of cloud platforms that offer advanced services that allow developers to accelerate innovation by automating manual, repetitive tasks. If you are in the nascent stages of moving to the cloud, you might appreciate this Forrester Wave analysis of the different cloud vendors for their ability to speed development by automating infrastructure while maintaining portability.

Gartner Cloud Predictions

Gartner announced its prediction that worldwide public cloud revenue will grow 21.4% to $186.4B in 2018, outpacing its initial expectations for the year. Growth across each category of public cloud spending -- BPaaS, IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS, -- will continue to grow through 2021 according to Gartner, reflecting enterprise’s broader investment in IT automation and modernization. As our CEO, Dr. Suleman, notes in his recent Forbes article,

“While you can benefit from cloudless DevOps automation and you can benefit from a DevOps-free cloud implementation, it’s only when the two come together that ultimate DevOps benefits are achieved. It is the combination of the cloud’s deep automation capabilities with DevOps processes that maximizes productivity and efficiency.”

Last, we give a shout out to GitHub who is celebrating its 10th birthday this week. Happy Birthday GitHub!
