As the pace slows a little in the summer months, we all gain a little more time for housekeeping. In keeping with that theme, in addition to the few DevOps news items from this past week, we’re visiting a couple of research notes that we missed over the past few weeks.

TN Marketing Grows Cloud Security with AWS WAF Managed Rules

Verizon reports in its 2019 Data Breach Investigations Report that web applications are the top hacking action in terms of breaches, with nearly 70% of breaches taking place this way. Conversely, the second leading breach action -- a backdoor or command and control channel -- was responsible for only about 25% of breaches. With such an obvious need to protect Web applications, our customer, TN Marketing, approached us about simultaneously staying on the frontline of cloud security. Like many businesses with a web-facing storefront, TN marketing wanted to ensure its web applications were protected while reducing cloud security management.

DockerCon took place this past week in San Francisco. The key announcement from Docker at the show was the unveiling of its New Docker Enterprise 3.0 platform which includes, according to the company, a new integrated Docker Desktop Enterprise to increase developer productivity and automate application delivery; Docker Kubernetes Services to simplify application scaling and deployment; and Docker Applications for high-velocity innovation. Docker also announced at the event it has created a foundation to help educate under served communities about modern technologies.

Underscoring a rapid shift in DevOps automation and IT Modernization, Cisco Systems released findings this week of a new survey in which IT Leaders reported that within two years more than two-thirds expect their approach to become either predictive (33%) or preemptive (33%). Kicking off our review of IT Modernization news this week, is a new report by DORA, the DevOps Research and Assessment group, illustrating how DevOps practices pay off for organizations in terms of performance and quality outcomes. In its annual report, DORA adds a new measure, SDO, software delivery and operational performance that measures availability, finding that SDO performance helps organizations achieve competitive advantages like increased profitability, productivity, market share, customer satisfaction, and the ability to achieve organization and mission goals.
